Pupils are left stranded in Lanark

SCORES of pupils were left stranded in Lanark as the transport arrangements to take them to their temporary school in Carluke collapsed at virtually the first sign of winter weather.

The incident last Tuesday was predicted by worried parents in the Gazette months ago, the choice of Braedale Road as the main pick-up and drop-off point for Lanark Primary pupils being decanted while their new school is built being blamed for the chaos.

Last Tuesday, when the area endured its first significant spell of snow and ice in 2013, the coaches assigned to take around 100 of the youngsters from Braedale Road – arguably the steepest street in Lanark – to their temporary home in the former Crawforddyke Primary in Carluke didn’t show up.

None of the parents we talked to blamed in any way the contracted transport company, KC Coaches of Carluke for the problem, supporting its decision to deem Braedale Road and the other main pick up point on Bellfield Road unsafe that morning as the roads appeared not to have been gritted.
