Railing against train service

An online petition hitting out at Scotrail for 'skipping stops' has now collected '¨1,878 signatures from angry commuters.

The campaign was set up just a few weeks ago by Milngavie commuter Lynn Reid.

Her petition calls for an end to the practice of part routes being cancelled and skipping stops to make up time.

Lynn told the Herald yesterday (Wednesday): “Five trains this morning stopped short – four at Partick – rather than running to Milngavie.

“While on Monday eight local stops were missed in both directions because the train was eight minutes late. I can understand if there is extreme weather but this is happening all the time.”

Bearsden North Councillor Duncan Cumming has also been inundated with complaints from constituents about the local train service.

One woman said she turned up at Bearsden at 8.55am to find the 8.59am to Edinburgh was delayed and unlikely to run, the 9.14am to Cumbernauld was cancelled, the 9.29am was also cancelled and the 9.44am was not expected to arrive into Bearsden until after 10am.

Councillor Cumming has complained to Scotrail and has written to the Scottish Transport Minister “in the hope of securing a meeting to discuss constituents’ concerns.” Lynn added: “Commuters have had enough of the daily train lottery. I hope many more people will sign the petition to put further pressure on Scotrail to stop this practice.”

However, a spokesperson for Scotrail insisted the decision to miss a station was “a last resort to minimise further disruption across the network”.

He added: “Despite the challenges of recent months, ScotRail remains the best performing large operator in the UK.”

The petition follows the news that fares have increased by an average of 3.2%, with peak tickets going up by 3.6%.
