Rare championship medal expected to do 'Well at auction

In the 1931/32 season, ’Well stunned the footballing world by winning the championship five points ahead of Rangers.

It was the first time since 1904 that a team out-with the Old Firm were crowned champions and remains The Steelmen’s greatest achievement.

The medal, which experts estimate will fetch between £1,500 and £2000, is expected to attract a lot of interest at the McTear’s Works of Art Auction on Friday.

The nine carat gold medal belonged to John McMenemy, a fixture in the ’Well aside that won 30 out of 38 ganes that season.

McTear’s managing director Brian Clements said: “Scottish football is synonymous with Celtic and Rangers, but of course other teams have been champions.

“In Motherwell’s case this has happened only once in the club’s history and to have one of these medals coming to auction is a real coup for football fans and collectors.

“This is a rare item and we expect there to be significant interest in this piece of sporting memorabilia.”

A medal presented to John’s father, the Scottish internationalist Jimmy ‘Napoleon’ McMenemy, in Celtic’s Glasgow Charity Cup win in 1915 and a Glasgow Cup medal won by Celtic forward Alec Thomson will also feature in the auction, with both items valued at £1,500 to £2000.

A medal from the Parkhead side’s first ever cup win in the club’s inaugural season is also estimated to sell for between £10,000 and £20,000.
