Recovery cafe raises a cup after winning a top award

A cafe dedidicated to helping those affected by addiction and mental health issues has been recognised with a prestigeous national award.

East Dunbartonshire Recovery Cafe won the ‘Strengthening Community Engagement and Resilience’ category in the recent Safer Communities 2015 Awards after being shortlisted from over 70 other nominees.

Dozens of local people who are on a journey of recovery come together at the cafe, held in Kirkintilloch Baptist Church Hall on the first Saturday of every month, to socialise, share a meal and enjoy some entertainment.

The cafe, which has now been running for almost two years, provides a trusted forum for people who might otherwise feel isolated and a welcoming environment where they can offer each other support and share their individual experiences.

The cafe, which is funded through the East Dunbartonshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership and is now entirely organised by participants, aims to provide both prevention and early intervention.

Andy Martin, chair of East Dunbartonshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership said: “Congratulations to all involved. This is brilliant recognition of a real recovery success story.”

He added: “It will give such a boost to those who are just starting out on that journey toward recovery as well as those whose recovery is well established.”
