Remember to register in time for the referendum

Voters are reminded to register to have their say at the Scottish independence referendum on September 18.

East Renfrewshire Council has issued a reminder that voters must be registered by September 2 to take part.

You can check register by filling in a form at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk - this includes 16 and 17 year olds who are also eligible to vote in the referendum.

Lorraine McMillan, ERC chief executive, said: “Many people assume that they are automatically on the electoral register because they pay council tax – this is not the case.

“Others turn up to vote and find out that they are not on the electoral roll because they forgot to tell us that they have moved house.

“We would urge everyone to double check that they are on the register before the 2 September deadline.”

To vote in the referendum, you must be aged 16 or over on September 18 and living in Scotland - you must also be a British, qualifying Commonwealth or European Union citizen.
