Royal visitor declares Foundry officially open

Barrhead Foundry has the royal seal of approval following its official opening on Tuesday.

The new £3.8 million facility was visited by HRH The Princess Royal, who spent time meeting Barrhead schoolchildren, those who use the Foundry’s leisure facilities and local business owners.

Princess Anne sat in on a Bookbug session at the children’s section of the new library, escorted by East Renfrewshire Council chief executive Lorraine McMillan.

An East Renfrewshire Council spokeswoman said: “HRH The Princess Royal also learned about major regeneration projects planned over the next 20 years and how they will improve and benefit the local area.

“Professor Craig Mahoney, principal of the University of the West of Scotland spoke to her about the strong link between the university and the Barrhead Foundry and the various activities being undertaken to create pathways to education and employment in East Renfrewshire.”

Barrhead man David Bell — who came up with the name to reflect the town’s industrial heritage — was also able to meet the royal visitor, and East Renfrewshire’s citizen of the year, young Lauren Cosgrove, presented the princess with flowers.
