Rugby club to become Commonwealth camp

Allan Glen’s Sports Club, in Bishopbriggs, has teamed up with website Campingninja to host the temporary campsite from July 16-August 6 to accommodate workforce contractors and volunteers working at the Games.

It would see a maximum of 500 campers, in up to 250 tents, arrive in Bishopbriggs - with temporary jobs running the site set to be made available to local people.

A letter has been distributed to members and neighbours informing them of the arrangement, which will see the club remain open to members and guests - with games oriented events held in the evenings.

A spokesperson for the club said: “We have not entered this relationship at haste and have had several meetings with the operating company, Allan Glen’s Trust as our landlords, our council, police and fire authorities and the other clubs in Glasgow who are committed to similar camping operations during the Games.

“Working together we believe we have achieved a position where we are happy to progress with this reputable operator.

“The committee of Allan Glen’s Sports Club and our sections shall work with Campingninja to maintain the excellent relations we generally hold and seek to maintain with our neighbours and local community and trust that this initiative shall be welcomed as the genuine effort it is to assist our club through our voluntary efforts.

“It is our intention to welcome members and residents to an open evening event at the commencement of the 2014 Games and to meet representatives of Campingninja.”

Club bosses were also keen to emphasise that it would not be a “festival style” site, but rather “a place to live whilst working hard at the Games”, with a “quiet camping policy” between 10pm-7am.

Similar sites were hosted by Campingninja throughout the London Olympics.

All money raised will be ploughed back into the club.
