Safety fears on school route

Millersneuk Primary School in Lenzie was not informed roadworks were starting on a regular route taken by pupils, at Garngaber Avenue.

One parent told the 
Herald the headteacher of the 
school was so concerned, he personally walked some of the children home himself.

She said: “Parents were not given notice of this work being carried out, which was absolutely ridiculous.

“It was so dangerous. There was heavy construction traffic which the children had to navigate around before crossing a busy road. A temporary path was put in place after we complained.

“The headteacher was very, very good. He walked the 
children all down and the workmen were very good, too.”

She and other residents are also concerned the work at Garngaber Road in Lenzie is being carried out in preparation for a new 
proposed housing development – BEFORE the application has been considered.

The proposal to build nine new houses “east of Woodilee Road” will come before a council committee in August.”

The plans also include a two-storey and single storey restaurant with licensed bar, car parking and associated 
access and landscaping on the site of the Larkfield Resource Centre at Woodilee Road.

East Dunbartonshire Council admitted to the 
Herald the school had not been informed of the work beforehand. Grace Irvine, Director of Neighbourhood Services at East Dunbartonshire Council said: “Works take place across our road and footpath networks on a daily basis without our schools automatically being informed.”

She added: “We understand when parents have concerns about their children’s safety and take these very 
seriously.

“Ensuring the safe travel of pupils to and from school is of paramount importance to the Council.

“While the work is being carried out a temporary footpath has been put in place avoiding the need for pupils to walk round construction traffic or cross Woodilee Road to get to Millersneuk Primary School.

“The work was identified to be carried out prior to any planning application being received and is required to facilitate any proposed future development of this site.”
