Sally Challenge takes triumph from tragedy

In just five years, southsider Andy McAllister has raised more than £100,000 in memory of his mother.

The 40-year-old from Pollokshields started the Sally Challenge in 2011, and more than 100 fitness enthusiasts are set to take part in this year’s duathlon.

The fitness expert said: “I always love being there on the day, it is inspiring watching as people of all fitness levels push themselves beyond what they thought was possible.

“When I see the competitors cross the finish line, I see how rewarding the event is.”

Sally, Andy’s mother, passed away in December 2011 with bowel cancer.

She managed to see the inaugural event, when she started every challenger off and welcomed them at the finish line with a huge smile and a medal.

Now, all funds raised from the event go towards The Accord Hospice, which supported her during her final months.

Ken Mathie, Fundraising Manager at ACCORD Hospice added: “ We are very grateful to Andy, his fellow organisers and all of the participants who take part in the Sally Challenge for all of their support.

“It is incredible how this event raises such a significant amount to help us provide our care to over 1000 patients and their families each year.”

Starting at the Rowardennan Hotel participants will jump on their bikes and cycle 13 road miles to the bike-run transition at the Wishingwell Campsite, Gartness where the competitors will change into trainers. A tad under 10 miles on the West Highland Way and a leg-sapping hill later, and runners will arrive at the event village with food from YO Sushi and sports massages from Achilles Heel.

In last year’s event, Clydesdale Hockey star Ross Macpherson claimed victory.

He said: “I take part in loads of events during the years and this one has the best atmosphere.”
