School gets £2m revamp

Cardinal Newman High in Bellshill is set to benefit from major refurbishment work in the coming months.

Several areas of the school, which has a roll of over 1,000 pupils, are to be developed and modernised at an estimated cost of £2 million.

The art department will become a modern, fit for purpose facility, while the PE department will have a new dance studio and fitness suite.

Outside a new multi-games area will be created, featuring an all-weather surface.

Mossend and Holytown councillor Frank McNally, convener of the education committee and also a former pupil of Cardinal Newman, said: “This is part of an ongoing plan to improve all our schools and provide pupils and staff with excellent facilities.

“It’s about making better use of our school buildings to improve the educational experiences of our children.”

Head teacher Kenny Ross added: “Everyone at the school is delighted to hear about this investment in our school, which will add a great deal to the quality and range of experiences we can provide our pupils.

“Next year our school will celebrate its 40th anniversary and I can’t think of a more fitting way to mark this milestone than with this exciting news.”

Bellshill Academy is also getting further refurbishment with tenders currently being considered for an upgrade of the music department, relocation of Community Information & Learning from @home Centre and the creation of an external multi-use games area.
