School on shortlist for awards

Pupils and staff at St Ninians High School are looking forward the the awards ceremony.

St Ninian’s High School has been nominated for the Enterprise and Employability Across Learning (Secondary) Award and the Innovation in Literacy and Numeracy Teaching Practice Award.

The Kirkintilloch school is no strager to success at the education awards having previously won the Head Teacher of the Year and Teacher of the Year accolades.

Head teacher Paul McLaughlin said: “We are delighted to be in the final in two categories. We have been quite successful for a few years now.

“The judges came out to visit and met the pupils and staff.

“We’ll be taking pupils and staff along to the final. I’ve been a few times and it’s always a good event.”

The school will join finalists at an awards ceremony at the Thistle Hotel, in Glasgow, on Tuesday, June 10, where judges will unveil the winners of each award category.

Councillor Eric Gotts, convener of education at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “I’d like to congratulate St Ninian’s High School on reaching the finals in not just one but two categories of the Scottish Education Awards. “It’s a great achievement when you consider that schools across Scotland submit for these awards and only three reach the final for each category.

“They should be rightly proud of having made it to this stage and I wish the school the very best of luck for the awards ceremony.”

St Ninian’s has developed a curriculum that recognises the achievement of all young people and aims to ensure progression towards positive post-school destinations.

Through a variety of partnerships and programmes of work, pupils are given the opportunity to develop skills for life, learning and work.

The awards, which celebrate the achievements of schools and teachers across Scotland, are open to all publicly funded schools, including secondary, primary, nursery and special schools.

There are also categories to recognise and reward the dedication of teachers, head-teachers and support staff across the country.
