Schools nominated for the education ‘Oscars’

Paul McKeever, head teacher at Stepps Primary, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Headteacher of the Year Award. Paul has been praised for his leadership skills and the amount of time he spends with individual pupils.

Andrew Sutherland, North Lanarkshire Council’s executive director of learning and leisure services, said: “On behalf of everyone associated with Learning and Leisure Services I would like to pass on my congratulations to Paul on being nominated for this highly prestigious award. The nomination recognises his hard work and commitment to his pupils and staff.

Two East Dunbartonshire schools have beaten off stiff competition from across Scotland to be selected as finalists at the same awards.

St Ninian’s High School, in Kirkintilloch, has been shortlisted for both the Numeracy Across Learning Award and the Enterprise and Employability Across Learning Award.

The school has been praised for its innovative approach to developing pupils’ numeracy skills and providing them with the skills necessary to go into work or further education.

Councillor Eric Gotts, convener of East Dunbartonshire Council’s education committee, said “Two shortlisted nominations for St Ninian’s is a wonderful achievement and I wish them the very best of luck in both categories.

“The school has been successful at these awards in the past so we are all keen to see them continue their winning ways. It is an excellent school with so many positive activities going on so this shortlisting is well deserved.”

And the pupil support team at Kirkintilloch High School has been named as a finalist in the Transforming Lives through Partnerships category.

Councillor Gotts added: ‘‘Congratulations to everyone at Kirkintilloch High School who has been involved in this work.

“It is a great achievement to be shortlisted in these national awards against some very stiff competition. I wish them all the very best and look forward to hearing how they get on.”

Head Teacher of Kirkintilloch HS, Eddie Muir, added: “We are delighted that our work with partners in securing better outcomes for our young people has been recognised within the context of the Scottish Education Awards.”

The finalists will be invited to attend an awards ceremony at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow on Wednesday, June 10.
