Scotland may get '˜hottest summer for 100 years' this year

Weather experts have predicted Scotland will enjoy the hottest day of the year in July.

According to their research Scotland will experience temperatures of 26°C on July 7, making it the hottest Scottish summer for 100 years.

After weeks of uncertainty, long-range forecasts have in the past few days started to agree that an imminent and perhaps unprecedented heatwave summer is on the way.

The tail end of El Nino – the same Pacific climate cycle which battered the UK with storms in the autumn – looks set to bring a prolonged spell of sunshine with the warmer La Nina weather system from the start of June.

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden said: “Temperatures will be on a gradual increase to even warmer values within this period.

“High 20s or even 30C are not out of the question with this type of high pressure set-up over the UK.”

Weather experts predict temperatures here to top 22C and some say we could be on track for a three-month scorching spell.

Summer 2016 could put previous hot years in 1915, 1949,1959, 1976, 2003, firmly in the shade.

Each of these years saw either record high temperatures for a limited time or unusually long periods of hot weather with 35.9C (96.6F) recorded in July 1976.
