Barrhead, Busby, Neilston, Thornliebank and Uplawmoor community councils were re-established in September — but Mearns, Giffnock, Netherlee, Eaglesham and Clarkston did not receive enough valid nominations to move forward.

Opposition councillor Jim Swift accused ERC of “alienating” residents and added: “Is the cost of not listening now going to mean it is even harder for the council to engage with commnunities?”

The call for nominees opened on Tuesday (November 10) for anyone aged 16 or over and on the electoral register — nomination forms must be returned by December 9.

Community councillors are needed for the Broom, Kirkhill and Mearns Kirk council, for Crookfur, Greenfarm and Mearns Village and for Giffnock.

Councillor Mary Montague said: “We’re looking for people from all walks of life — all you need are ideas, energy and enthusiasm.”

An East Ren spokeswoman added: “East Ren is committed to having a full quota of vibrant community councils and supporting all 11 to be re-established.

“Following the elections, new community councils will be established and training and support will be provided.”
