The bollard, which replaced safety barriers at the junction as part of the work, is believed to have been struck by a vehicle at the corner of Kerr Street at Cowgate on either Wednesday or Thursday this week.

A bollard on the other side of the junction, at Catherine Street, was also flattened a fortnight ago.

Thousands of local people have been campaigning against the Cowgate works being carried out by East Dunbartonshire Council, which began in February this year.

Protestors fear for the safety of pedestrians, particularly disabled people, blind people, the elderly and children.

The project has seen the removal of traffic lights and pedestrian crossings at the junction, as well as the safety barriers.

The Herald has contacted the council and is awaiting a reponse.
