Loyal customers of ‘Shaky’s Plaice’, based in the carpark of the Kirkintilloch branch of Sainsbury’s, were left outraged last month when told that owner George Hamill had been given his marching orders.

Local resident Alison Cannibal set up a petition which attracted hundreds of signatures, while many people also vowed to boycott Sainsbury’s.

Now the retail giants have had a change of heart and George, who was initially told he’d have to leave by the end of August, has been given a six month extension of his lease.

But store bosses still insist that he will eventually have to move on to a new site.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Following positive discussions with George at Shaky’s Plaice and after listening to feedback from the local community we’re delighted to extend the lease for six months while George relocates his business.

“We’ll also be offering support, where possible, in helping George find a new location in Kirkintilloch and providing expert advice to help his business build on 18 years’ of success. We wish George and Shaky’s Plaice all the best for the future.”
