He also admitted robbing Ashraf Hamed of two packets of cigarettes at Your Local Licensed Grocer in Main Street, Mossend, in December 2014.

Allan, who was with a pal, went into Bankhead Stores and asked for two bottles of Buckfast. He said he had no money and grabbed for a charity tub on the counter.

Mr Nawar brought out a wooden pole and waved it at the accused. He knocked the plastic tub from Allan’s hand and told him to get out.

However, Allan grabbed the pole from him and struck him twice on the face. He then left the shop with a bottle of Buckfast.

The shopkeeper was treated for an injury to his face, but wasn’t detained in hospital.

In the other raid Allan pointed the sharp end of a broken can at an assistant before running off with two packets of cigarettes.

Allan admitted the charges more than six months ago, but sentence had been deferred for reports on his mental health.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said his client had a difficult background and was “very vulnerable”. His dad had served life for murder and on his release had “led him astray”. He has now been sent back to prison.

Mr Bruce said Allan, when sober, is “very likeable and cheerful”.
