Shortlist announced for Scottish architects awards

Twenty-three buildings across Scotland have been shortlisted for prestigious awards.

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has announced the shortlist for its 2016 accolades.

The buildings which feature include: West Regent Street, Edinburgh; Blakeburn, Roxburghshire; the British Golf Museum and Café, St Andrews; Castle MacLellan Foods, Kirkcudbright; City of Glasgow College, Riverside Campus, Glasgow; East Kilbride Health Centre, East Kilbride; Forsinard Lookout Tower, Sutherland; Glasgow Women’s Library, Glasgow; Helensburgh Town Centre Public Realm, Helensburgh; High Mill & Preparing Rooms, Verdant Works, Dundee; “it’s bigger on the inside”, Edinburgh; Laggan Locks, North Laggan; Lairdsland Primary School, Kirkintilloch; Midden Studio, Argyll and Bute; Polnoon, Glasgow by Proctor and Matthews Architects; The Pyramid Viewpoint, Dunbartonshire; Ronald McDonald House, Glasgow; Saunders Centre, Science & Technology Building, Glasgow; Sighthill Regeneration, Glasgow; St Vincent Crescent Sub-station, Glasgow; The Surgeons’ Hall Museums, Edinburgh and Zinc-House, Angus.

The judging panel for this year, chaired by Willie Watt PRIAS, also includes Denise Bennetts FRIAS (representing the Royal Institute of British Architects), Alan Jones PPRSUA Hon FRIAS, Andy Leitch (Forestry Commission Scotland) and Stuart McKill (Saint-Gobain).

Willie Watt, president of the RIAS, said: “We have a strong and diverse shortlist. While fees and procurement continue to challenge all of us our awards celebrate the very best that is being built in Scotland.

“This is a list which goes in scale from a small house extension/reconfiguration to major education provision.

“Geographically although, unusually, there are no Island visits, we will travel from a factory in Dumfriesshire to a lookout tower in Sutherland.

“This is a list that fully demonstrates the privilege of living in our country and how architects have embraced the responsibility that brings.”
