And this year there will be a new format for the road race.

With the help of South Lanarkshire Leisure and the roads department the organisers, Carluke Development Trust, have devised an expanded and safe route around Yieldshields to create a new 10K distance more recognisable to those runners on the circuit.

That gives an opportunity for runners and walkers of all abilities to come together to show their support for a friend or loved one or to just be part of the great atmosphere created on the day.

The route will start and finish as normal at the John Cumming Stadium but on reaching the swing park at Yieldshields the route is extended along the B7056 to Westerhouse Farm which will be the turning point.

The runners will return to the swing park and turn right onto Stonedyke Road picking up the traditional route back to the stadium.

All sponsorship money going to the new Lanarkshire Beatson Cancer clinic.

Over 200 runners are expected, with teams already signing up from Asda Newmains, and RW Scott in Carluke.

The road race is held under Scottish Athletics Association rules, so those taking part have to be 15 or over; to encourage more teenagers to take part the Trust is halving the registration fee to £6.60 for those aged 15 to 17.

And the Trust’s development manager Kathleen Feeney stressed: “You don’t actually have to run. It is called a race, but you can come and walk the scenic route! Come with a group of friends and walk with friends!”

Inside the stadium the family-friendly Fun Runs take place, aimed at primary schoolchildren, families and even toddlers. Three one-mile runs will be held on the track, and for safety reasons numbers are limited to 144 in total, so it is best to register.

Activities on the day will include free face painting, Beat the Goalie, Basketball hoops, Tae Kwon Do and other athletic activities.
