Southside needs a scrub?

Southside streets are blighted by rubbish — that’s the verdict from Extra readers.

Dog fouling, rubbish and bulk waste remain top of the agenda for many residents .

In a letter to The Extra, one reader writes: “Day after day [in Shawlands], there’s dog faeces, rubbish and cigarette ends all over the place. No one seems to take responsibility for clearing the Arcade.”

The situation has encouraged one Victoria Road resident to protest online. @WaronLitter told The Extra: “I’ve only recently taken to Twitter but have been trying to force those responsible to take action for a few years. I report all I see using the myGlasgow app, a useful tool, but response times are poor.

“The council has a job to do, and businesses must take more responsibility to clean up mess they or their customers produce. Fast food litter is also a big problem — more fines, higher profile prosecutions and more wardens are needed.”

A council spokeswoman maintained: “Everyone has a responsibility to do their bit.

“We have just leafleted Shawlands residents advising how they can dispose of their bulk items, and we have street sweeping carried out in the area seven days a week and also after 2am Thursday-Sunday.”

She added: “To report antisocial behaviour such as flytipping, dog fouling or graffiti, the public should call Clean Glasgow on 0300 343 7027.”
