Southside streets are a dog-gone mess

A CRACKDOWN on dog owners who do not clean up after their pets is taking place in Pollokshields this month.

Community Safety Glasgow targets 10 wards each month, and will tackle Pollokshields in February — focusing on reported hotspots at Shields Road, Tassie Street, Eastwood Avenue, Barrland Street, Pollokshaws Road and Waverley Street.

Pollokshields councillor Norman MacLeod praised the efforts of Community Safety Glasgow, and told The Extra: “From time to time I am contacted by members of the public drawing my attention to a particular area. In all cases I have received very prompt assistance from Community Safety Glasgow.

“The best answer to this problem is for dog owners to behave responsibility and most do so — however, the few who neglect to clean up after their pets should not be surprised if they receive a fine.”

Despite the ongoing campaign, Extra readers have complained that dog fouling continues to blight southside streets.

Facebook follower El Ahrairah said: “I live in Shawlands. Walking Deanston Drive in the mornings is like walking a minefield.”

June Logan added: “More bins is the way forward. It’s an embarrassment thing, having to carry bags about — the more bins, the more people will pick up.”

And it seems that Glasgow isn’t the only area suffering.

The issue provoked debate on Facebook page Clarkston.com, and a representative said: “We’ve had lots of comments from residents who are fed up treading in dog poo, or getting it on the wheels of prams. Lots of problem areas seem to be near schools.

“Most dog owners are responsible and pick up after their pets — it’s hard to understand those who don’t.”

In either authority, the fixed penalty notice is £40 — rising to £60 if not paid within 28 days.

Dog fouling problems can be reported in Glasgow on 0800 027 7027 or to East Renfrewshire’s dog warden service on 0800 013 0076.
