Southsiders rally for Great Scottish Run

Some 30,000 people pounded the streets of Glasgow on Sunday for the annual Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run.

With marathon runners taking in Bellahouston and Pollok Parks — as well as the city centre route for those opting for a 10k - it was only right that southsiders donned their running shoes.

And for Newton Mearns man David Samuels, this 10k was tougher than most — falling after a 25 hour fast for Yom Kippur.

The keen athlete started running in the 60s while at university, and said he would be happy “running his age” and hitting the 64 minute mark — but David went two better, with a time of 62mins.

David was runnng in aid of World Jewish Relief, and said: “I’ve been a supporter for many years because their work is so vital helping those living in severe poverty around the world.”

Also taking part in the 10k challenge were John Brennan, Drew Campbell and Paul Miller, running under the group name Flabbey Road in aid of Yorkhill Children’s Foundation.

It was seasoned runner Drew’s third 10k, but a first time for both John and Paul — but the team must have done something right, having raised £1,000 so far at www.justgiving.com/FlabbeyRoad.

After celebrating hitting his fundraising target with a curry and a few beers, John told The Extra: “We’re all dads and all of us have had some exposure to the work the hospital does.

“We did varying levels of training but nothing too strict. We all felt tremendous afterwards — it was a great achievement and we’re signing up for next year again.”

Southsider Colin Mackie crossed the finish line for the West of Scotland Deaf Children’s Society, marking over 30 years of taking part in the Great Scottish Run.

He commented: “It was a great day — what a turnout. This was my 31st year and I’m already looking forward to next year.”

Colin is on his way towards a £300 target, and is still accepting donations at www.justgiving.com/Colin-Mackie4.
