Southsiders stage local food conference

SOCIAL enterprise group Locavore are putting Shawlands on the environmental map by hosting the first Glasgow Local Food Conference.

The organisation opened on Skirving Street last year in a bid to promote sustainable local food, and operates from a non-profit shop, paying earnings back into community green projects.

Now, it’s the first of a collection of Glasgow groups to organise a public event promoting what’s on offer across the city.

It’s hoped that the first official meeting will bring together community groups, growers, businesses and members of the public interested in the locally-produced food movement.

Locavore co-ordinator Reuben Chesters told The Extra: “We’re just trying to establish a formal meeting open to anyone with an interest in local food, and how we can go about improving the food system in Glasgow.

“We’ll be hosting a 10-15 minute chat on what Locavore has done over the last year – opening up and working on the shop, delivering vegetables across the city through our subscribers scheme, teaching cookery classes and setting up gardens.

“The next part is an open stage, with five minute pitches from different organisations — providing some info on what they do, how they need help and what they can do in the future to help take local food forward in Glasgow.”

Organisations presenting at the first group include North Lanarkshire honey producer Plan Bee, southside restaurant Cookie and a Glasgow farmer — an open space session will follow, allowing attendees to swap numbers and discuss how they can help one another.

The event — under the heading Wishes and Wants — will also include locally-produced food courtesy of Locavore, as well as a few films on local projects.

The floor is also open to anyone with a project in hand (or in mind) for a five minute slot – contact [email protected] for more information.

The free event kicks off at 5.30pm on Sunday, February 10 at the Glad Cafe (Pollokshaws Road) and runs until 10pm. All are welcome to attend, although booking is advised at www.eventbright.co.uk/event/5333839658.
