The charity is seeking information after a badger was found dead following what is being described as an attack by dogs.

It said a member of the public came across the young female badger in a field next to Meadowhead Road, Craigneuk.

A Scottish SPCA inspector said: “This person heard male voices shouting, dogs barking and an animal squealing.

“The badger had a deep laceration to its back end. A post mortem revealed it sustained injuries consistent with being attacked by more than one dog. The results revealed it was killed by a heavy blow to the head.

“The injuries sustained were horrendous and it would have been caused a tremendous amount of suffering before it was killed.

“It is likely the dogs involved would have extensive and shocking injuries, and it is doubtful the owners would have sought veterinary attention through fear of detection.

“This is not the first time voices have been heard late at night in this area and animals have been subject to abhorrent hunting activities.”
