St Columba's mourns Canon Glackin

Canon Edward Glackin, parish priest at St Columba's Church in Viewpark for the past 33 years, has sadly passed away.

The 81-year-old died peacefully today after suffering ill health over the past few months.

Canon Glackin was born in Craigneuk on August 11, 1934, and grew up attending St Patrick’s Church in Shieldmuir.

He studied at the Scots College, Valladolid, Spain, being ordained in March 1958.

His first parish was St Ninian’s in Hamilton, then to St Mary’s Coatbridge in 1968.

Canon Glackin was a spiritual director at Valladolid from 1969 until 1973, when he went to St Brigid’s, Newmains.

He was appointed parish priest of St Columba’s in 1983 where he remained for the last 33 years.

He celebrated the golden jubilee of his ordination in 2008, and was made a Canon by Bishop Devine in the same year.

He had been suffering from ill health for the last few months and Fr Jim Grant had recently been appointed to run St Columba’s during his absence.
