St Ninian’s moved by Holocaust survivors

School librarian Donna Baird and the school’s history department organised a short story challenge for S1-3 students, and 80 youngsters submitted their work.

As with last year’s competition, a post online about the success of the challenge lead to St Ninian’s being asked to attend Scotland’s national Holocaust Memorial Day event in Ayr.

The school’s efforts also meant that they were offered the opportunity of a talk from two Holocaust survivors, Ela Stein Weissburger and Hasan Hasanovic.

Mrs Baird commented: “We are deeply honoured to be associated with the Holocaust Memorial Day organisation in Scotland.

“It is both humbling and motivating to hear testimony’s from those who endured in such horrific circumstances.”

All were incredibly moved by the experience and the stories they heard.

Head girl Sarah McIlwham commented: “This was a very emotional night and something I will not forget lightly.

“I’m thankful to have been asked to go to the event and I’m honoured to have been able to hear the stories of each individual and their experiences of the Holocaust and genocide.”
