The Stalled Spaces Scotland programme, led by Architecture and Design Scotland as part of Legacy 2014, will offer support for community groups putting in work to bring derelict sites back to life.

Projects could include temporary gardens, events and arts spaces and urban growing — and East Renfrewshire Council has pledged to match funding received through the programme.

Councillor Tony Buchanan, convener for infrastructure and sustainable growth, said: “The support from Stalled Spaces will give people the opportunity to do something positive with awkward pockets of unused ground in our town centres.

“We are keenly anticipating applications that will transform forgotten corners into show pieces or turn the street into a stage, and we want residents and businesses to be imaginative about how spaces can be used in new and colourful ways.”

The Stalled Spaces project was pioneered by Glasgow in 2011, benefiting 75 spaces and southside groups including South Seeds, whose initial funding went to community gardens on Craigie and Calder streets.

Bailie Liz Cameron commented: “It’s wonderful that Glasgow has sown the seeds for a national scheme and we are happy to be able to pass on the lessons we have learned to other towns and cities.”
