Step forward for sport centre and Rob Roy FC

The new Kirkintilloch Sports Complex took a major step closer to reality as councillors approved funding for the project and instructed officers to work towards constructing the new facility.

During a virtual meeting of East Dunbartonshire Council on Thursday, October 1, members unanimously agreed to approve in principle additional capital funding of £1.3 million.

The total cost of the project will be £4.3 million.

In March this year the council agreed to progress the design and construction of the new sports complex on a site to the west of Park Burn at Southbank Business Park in Kirkintilloch

This project follows on from work done by Kirkintilloch Rob Roy FC and will feature a car park, changing facilities for up to four teams plus manager’s office and a full-size floodlit football pitch and stand for spectators, giving the Juniors club a new home ground.

In June, the club reached an agreement to rent the facility from the council, which it will finance by selling off its current home ground at Adamslie Park to Dawn Homes for redevelopment as housing – a deal which relies on the
existence of an alternative sporting venue within a three mile radius.

Thomas Glen, Depute Chief Executive at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “We look forward to progressing to the next stage of the development of the Kirkintilloch Sports complex following the unanimous vote to proceed with its construction at the Council meeting last Thursday.”
