Story time at Eastwood High

Tall tales were flying at a Storytelling Festival attended by Eastwood High and Crookfur Primary pupils this week.

A second year English class had paired up with P6s for a reading project some months before, with Eastwood S3s stepping in as group leaders on the day.

With funding from the Scottish Book Trust and both schools, 60 pupils were able to settle down to a good tale or two, as well as workshops on planning the perfect story.

Eastwood librarian Anne De’Ath told The Extra: “Crookfur’s Miss Graham organised two storytellers, Ron Fairweather and Fergus McNicol, to lead the event, while she and Mrs Jenkinss from Eastwood led workshops.

“The day was divided into three separate sections; a fun exercise involving jumping and clapping, then hearing some amazing stories, including one based on Irish folklore.

“Then the storytellers held workshops focusing on how to plan a story, and the prefects were able to help the younger pupils organise their ideas.”

Another workshop focused on emotions and mindfulness — tying in with the aim of the day to put primary pupils at ease in the big school, as well as developing communication skills for all.
