Stronger community stance urged against fracking

Shawlands and Strathbungo Community Council is pressing for a Glasgow-wide declaration to ban shale gas exploration and exploitation.

The first shipment of US shale gas arrives in the UK. A tanker carrying 27,500m3 of ethane from US shale fields is due to dock at Grangemouth, the refinery and petrochemicals plant owned by Ineos.
The company said the gas would replace dwindling North Sea supplies and secure the future of the plant's workforce.
Jim Ratcliffe, Ineos founder and chairman, said: "This is a hugely important day for Ineos and the UK. Shale gas can help stop the decline of British manufacturing."

It wants fracking to be put on the agenda for a community council forum event on May 20, and says Southside Campaign Against Fracking should also be invited.

Meanwhile its spokesman says there’s concern about a perceived lack of discussion among community councils about the present public consultation on the issue.

Its spokesman said: “Shawlands and Strathbungo Community Council consider a joint declaration by all of Glasgow’s community councils in support of a ban on shale gas exploration and possible extraction as one method for community councils to protect the diverse communities we represent.

“A joint declaration by Glasgow’s community councils to ban shale gas exploration and possible extraction would also lend support to the Glasgow City Council decision to ban shale gas exploration and exploitation within the city boundaries.”
