Jacqueline Porteous (38) of Hamilton was named Student Photojournalist of the Year for her No Nails image and was runner-up in the overall Student of the Year category.

Elizabeth Morton (60) from Motherwell was second in the Open category and also received a Merit award in the same section.

Jacqueline, whose picture depicted a farrier working on a horse, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I was Student Photojournalist of the Year. It was totally unexpected.

“I was on my friend’s farm when I took a range of pictures of the farrier at work. I thought it was a really interesting image but I didn’t expect it to win an award.”

Jacqueline has also been awarded Print of the Year by Loxley Colour, in Cumbernauld, for a different image in the series and she is delighted that the farrier images have proved so popular.

Elizabeth received second place for her Road to Mallaig picture, which showed off this beautiful landscape in Scotland (featured as Picture of the Week on page 29).

Her Merit award was for her view of the Scottish Parliament stairway.

Elizabeth commented: “I was really pleased to pick up two awards at the British Institute of Professional Photography Awards. To get one was great but to get two was just so exciting.”

Both students are about to complete their HND Photography course and this recognition has been a great end to their studies.

Jacqueline has now launched her own photography business ‘I Luv Photography’ with a fellow student.

Elizabeth added: “When I took early retirement three years ago I bought a camera but I didn’t even know how to turn it on.

“I enrolled in the course to help me use it properly and learn some skills. It has been a lot of hard work but I have learned so much.”
