Substation fire causes power cut in Glasgow’s Southside

The fire service was called out to tackle the fire at the substation.

Emergency services were called to the substation in Battlefield Road earlier in the evening, with crews from two fire appliances tackling the blaze.

The fire caused a power outage, which affected many areas across the Southside, including Pollokshield, Shawlands, Strathbungo, Govanhill, Queen’s Park and Netherlee.

Scottish Power Energy Networks reported it was aware of a power cut in the G41, G42 and G44 postcode areas of the city.

Engineers were sent to investigate, but had to wait until the emergency services had made the area safe before repairs could be carried out.

Some households had their electricity restored when engineers managed to remotely re-route the supply, but many were without power for several hours.

This morning, SP Energy Networks reported an update about the fault via Twitter, saying: “It was damage to our underground cabling at Langside substation. Our team altered the network to restore supplies. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
