Support for petition against Bearsden Hub

Concerned resident Meg Macfarlane started an online petition last week and already she has gathered a total of 61 signatures.

She says local people are worried about the lack of parking facilities at the new hub, congestion on the A809 Drymen Road, public safety, the external appearance of the facility and the sale of Brookwood Library and Bearsden registry office to raise the funds for the new Hub.

Meg said: “These objections aren’t just coming from me. I’ve talked to many other constituents, friends and representatives from groups in the community.

“So many people are appalled at the council’s decisions and the lack of consideration to their complaints and concerns about the new Hub.

“Few constituents wish this hub located in a clearly congested area with few parking facilities, near the busy A809 Drymen Rd, thus posing safety, access and exit problems for young and old.

“Also, these proposals mean that other community assets, namely Brookwood Library and the local Registry Office on Roman Road will be sold off.

“The clock is ticking, and we only have a small window of opportunity to object.

“A final vote will soon be taken and planning permission may be granted.”

Heather Holland, land planning and development manager said: “The Community Hub aims to improve local accessibility to a range of public services and providing an enhanced community resource for the people of Bearsden.

“The current design has been developed in partnership with service providers, the Council’s development partner Hub West Scotland, and has taken on board feedback derived from a number of recent community engagement sessions.

Around 80 people attended the latest session at Bearsden Burgh Hall where there was a generally positive response to the proposed plans.

“The Council’s capital investment plan will see over £250m of investment across East Dunbartonshire over a 10 year period.

This significant investment in new facilities will result in the disposal of a number of assets deemed surplus to operational requirements.”
