Survey asks how to make Lenzie better

The Lenzie Street Design Project aims to improve public space, encourage more sustainable travel and make it easier for people to access public transport around the station forecourt area.

East Dunbartonshire Council’s Transport Team has teamed up with Sustrans Scotland, who will be helped with some of the cost of the proposed construction by developers looking to build houses in the area.

An on-street consultation event was held in Lenzie last Tuesday (September 27) and member of the public made a number of suggestions on how they would like the area developed. Whilst the initial consultation ends on 1 November 2016, the website will remain open as a place to find out about future events and opportunities, and to get directly involved in the design process.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said: ““We want to hear from all members of the community - including residents, business owners and commuters of all ages - on how we can improve the area and encourage greater use of sustainable transport.”

As well as public realm improvements, it is hoped there could be work carried out on the car park layout and bus waiting facilities - in conjunction with Network Rail and ScotRail/Abellio.

The council will also be working on a new parking strategy for the area - potentially including short-term parking which will benefit businesses.

Paul Ruffles, Street Design Co-ordinator for Sustrans Scotland, said: “We are excited to be working in Lenzie with East Dunbartonshire Council, local residents, businesses and stakeholders.

Workshops will be held in November, the New Year and spring 2017 to develop and showcase ideas. The ambition is to trial agreed design proposals in April or May 2017.
