Tanya hopes beauty will kill the ‘beast’

An East Renfrewshire beauty hopes to use her good looks to help raise awareness of a littleknown and very aggressive childhood cancer.

As reigning Miss Renfrewshire, Tanya McAlister, 21, from Newton Mearns is competing in a beauty pageant called Crown & Glory.

The pageant supports a charity dedicated to finding ways of early diagnosis and treatment for the cancer Neuroblastoma, the most common cancer outside the brain in children under five years old.

In most cases, it is only diagnosed when it has already spread and is then at a ‘high risk’ stage.

Even with chemotherapy and other therapies, there is an 80 per cent chance of relapse.

All contestants in the pageant are aiming to raise as much money as possible for the charity Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance (NCCA).

For more information on the disease, a dedicated website has been set up.
