Teen stabbed in Shawlands making “excellent progress”

The 13-year-old Shawlands Academy pupil stabbed during his lunch break on Monday is making “excellent progress” in hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

The good news was passed to parents in a letter yesterday from Ann Grant, head teacher at the Glasgow secondary school.

She also revealed that to provide reassurance to pupils, Police Scotland will provide a “presence” outside the school in the coming days.

It is also understood Senior management also went round every class in the school yesterday morning, offering any appropriate support to pupils who required it.

There had been a small amount of criticism on social media, suggesting the school had shown “a lack of pastoral care.”

Another parent complained that they had not been present when their child was questioned by Police officers.

The second year pupil was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Govan following the altercation around 1.30pm on Monday.

Ms Grant’s letter said: “As I expect you are aware an incident occurred on Kilmarnock Road during the lunch break on Monday 11 March, in which one of our pupils was the victim of an assault.

“I am pleased to report that our pupil is making excellent progress and we expect him to make a full recovery.

“Although I cannot provide any details, I can reassure you that no other pupil from Shawlands Academy was involved in this incident. The person in police custody is not from Shawlands Academy.

“I thought you would want to know that senior school staff were quickly in attendance and ensured all other pupils were safe and that they returned promptly to school.

“Following the incident, we have been made aware that Police Scotland will provide a police presence outside the school over the course of the next few days.

“Thank you to everyone who has been in contact with the school expressing concern for our pupil.

“If you, or your son or daughter have any concerns, please contact the school and we will do all we can to support you.”
