Provost Eileen Logan is among those who will pay tribute to Tom at the service.

Tom (65) was a quiet man, making his career as a librarian latterly at Bell College, later the University of the West of Scotland, in Hamilton.

He was also secretary of Lanark Chess Club, and secretary of the local Labour Party, an active member heavily involved in campaigning in the run-up to the general election in May this year.

Lanark councillor Catherine McClymont knew Tom from when he was a Unison steward at Bell College many years ago.

“We will fondly remember Tom as “the Smiler”,” she said. “He always greeted us with a huge smile.

“He will be missed by many.”

The Thanksgiving Service is at 11.30am, and all his friends and former colleagues are invited.
