Time capsule marks town’s past

It will contain a wealth of treasures saved from the Kirkintilloch 800 celebration in 2011.

That was when East Dunbartonshire Council, local groups and residents celebrated the 800th anniversary of Kirkintilloch becoming a Barony Burgh.

A record of those celebrations - including photographs, documents, leaflets and memorabilia - has been sealed in a time capsule, which will be installed during works to create the public square at Barleybank.

Also included is a unique tapestry created by youngsters at Kidsplay Childcare in Kirkintilloch - providing a touching snapshot of local life for future generations - with youngsters designing a series of panels which were sewn together.

East Dunbartonshire Council started work on the Barleybank site last month, which includes the creation of a square between St Mary’s Church and the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “Barleybank is another step towards a brighter future for Kirkintilloch so it’s entirely appropriate for a time capsule celebrating the town’s rich history to be buried at the site.

“The capsule will include an extensive array of materials from the wonderful Kirkintilloch 800 celebrations - linking past and future in a unique way. I am delighted that the capsule includes a special tapestry created by youngsters at Kidsplay Childcare and hope they feel proud of their efforts, which have now been preserved for future generations.”

The Barleybank Public Realm Project is expected to be completed in June.

It includes increasing the accessibility of the canal towpath by making the access ramp less steep, creating a decked area overlooking the canal and developing a stepped area.

It ties in with the centenary of St Mary’s Parish Church building, with the church involved in the project.

All of the works form part of Kirkintilloch Town Centre Masterplan.

Extensive consultation has taken place with residents, traders, organisations and the specially-formed Kirkintilloch Champions Group.
