Tough mudders raise cash in memory of Callum

A team of Tough Mudders took on the gruelling charity challenge on Sunday — all in honour of a Netherlee Nursery pupil whose life was cut tragically short.

The team of eight set out from The Cartvale in Busby for Dalkeith Country Park, where they tackled a 12 mile obstacle course in memory of Callum Lally (4), who passed away at the East Ren nursery in February last year as a result of a heart defect.

Their efforts were in aid of Callum’s Causes — a charity fund set up by mum Catriona in aid of Yorkhill Children’s Charity — which has raised £5,375 so far.

Donna Flower, Callum’s nursery teacher, told The Extra: “All eight of us — myself, Catriona, my three girls and son-in-law and two other friends — completed the whole course, and it was a tremendous day.

“I’ve never seen so much mud in my life. We had to tackle a skip full of ice, walk the plank about 30 feet up and swing across hoops.

“We had a mile of intense mud, and that’s a long way to be pulling your legs out. Nothing prepares you for it, but it was an amazing experience.”

It was a cause close to the team’s heart and each donned a red t-shirt — the colour of Callum’s favourite cartoon character, Lightning McQueen — with his picture on it.

Donna, from Clarkston, added: “Callum died just last year, and it’s been hard — but Catriona wanted to open the charity in his name.

“She was really worried about doing Tough Mudder but she was an absolute star and did so well.”

The team are still raking in the charity cash — and anyone else who wishes to sponsor them can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/CallumsCauses.
