The motorway was closed in both directions following several traffic accidents caused by vehicles skidding in the snowy conditions.

Despite this disruption all local services remain in operation.

Local roads were also in a poor state. Although no schools announced closures, the difficult conditions meant many school buses were cancelled, affecting Our Lady’s High School, Cumbernauld Academy, Greenfaulds High School, Cumbernauld and St Andrew’s Primary, Clencryan, Redburn and Baird Memorial Primary School.

North Lanarkshire Council has seen many angry complaints from residents on its social media, with several people claiming efforts to grit the roads were inadequate.
