Safer road-crossings and speed reduction measures are key actions requested by the community to improve road safety along The Loaning in Motherwell.

In the wake of the death of Motherwell schoolgirl Abbie McLaren on the road last year, and following major pressure from the local community, North Lanarkshire Council held its largest ever road safety consultation.

As part of this process the local authority hosted two well-attended consultation workshops which allowed local people to give their views on road safety improvement proposals for The Loaning.

After extensive analysis of the responses, the main two issues highlighted by the public were a desire for safer crossing of the road, and measures to reduce the speed of drivers.

These two issues have subsequently been developed into a four priority stages.

The four stages identified within the scheme are: 1 - between Logans Road and Dechmont Avenue, including the area around the shops; 2 - the area next to Ailsa Nursery Centre, 3 - at the junction with Ladywell Road, 4 - the junction with Hamilton Road.

Council depute leader, and Motherwell West councillor, Paul Kelly, said : “This is a community-led project and I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in helping to move forward these plans to improve road safety in the area.

“The feedback from local people has been crucial in helping shape these proposals which will help improve traffic management and pedestrian facilities.”

Detailed plans have been drawn up for the Stage 1 proposals between Logans Road and Dechmont Avenue.

Proposed improvements include: the installation of mini-roundabouts at the junctions of Logans Road and at Scotia Street; a signalised puffin crossing outside the shops on The Loaning; the existing road would be resurfaced between Logans Road and Dechmont Avenue, along with selected sections of footpaths; and new street lighting.

Before the Stage 1 proposals are implemented, contact is being made with directly affected households and businesses to get their feedback.

Works will then commence on Stage 1 as soon as possible, dependent upon safety guidelines around the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Stages 2, 3 and 4 will then follow.
