Only use disabled parking spaces if you are disabled

Scottish Water is asking visitors to the Milngavie reservoirs to use disabled car parking spaces there only if they are disabled to help ensure everyone who wants to can enjoy the amenity.

Signage at the parking spaces states they are for use only by people with disabilities, but concerns have been raised with Scottish Water and the Friends of Milngavie Reservoir (FoMR) group that these instructions are not being followed.

To ensure that the parking spaces are kept available for disabled people, security checks will be introduced in the coming weeks.

The Craigmaddie and Mugdock reservoirs in Milngavie are an important local beauty spot and recreational facility.

The two reservoirs store water that is treated at the nearby Milngavie Water Treatment Works and supplies 700,000 customers in parts of the Greater Glasgow area.

The site, which has historic, recreational and environmental significance, attracts over 160,000 visitors per year.

Ruaridh Macgregor, Scottish Water corporate affairs manager, said: “We want the Milngavie reservoirs site to be accessible for as many people as possible and that is why there are a small number of parking spaces for disabled visitors. We would ask people visiting the site to respect the car park restrictions.

“Recently we have seen an increase in people cycling and walking to the site, which is great to see and we would like more people to follow suit as it helps ease parking and access issues at the site for everyone, including disabled people.”

Alan Douglas, of the FoMR group, added: “FoMR is supportive of sustainable travel to the Milngavie reservoirs as part of a regular exercise routine.

FoMR believes keeping cars – except those with a disabled badge - out of the reservoir area will help maintain it as a safe and pollution-free environment for the benefit of everyone.”
