Road crash on M80

Details are beginning to emerge of a multi-vehicle collision which happened on the M80 near Cumbernauld today.

A police spokeswoman confirmed: “Around 12.30pm police were called to a report of a road crash involving three vehicles on the M80 southbound at Junction 5, Cumbernauld.

Emergency services attended and road was closed for a short time. No details on injuries at this time.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service repor that paramedics requested support shortly after noon. Initial reports stated that four cars were involved and one motorist was trapped in their vehicle.

Fire crews were dispatched from Cumbernauld, Stepps and Easterhouse with the first unit on the scene within eight minutes, but found none of the vehicle occupants were trapped. One woman was taken to the Southern General Hospital for treatment.

The scene has now been cleared and traffic flow was restored around two hours after the incident.
