Weather warning for rainstorms covering East Renfrewshire and Glasgow

East Renfrewshire and Glasgow could be hit with torrential rain and thunderstorms later today and tonight.

Heavy rain could cause flooding and difficult driving conditions.

The Met Office has issued a storm weather alert for an area of south and west Scotland, which comes into force early this afternoon (Tuesday, June 16) and lasts until 6am on Wednesday.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected, with torrential downpours bringing 25-35mm of rain in an hour – and perhaps 40-50mm in two to three hour spells in a few places.

Although some areas will miss the storms, the Met Office says they will be keenly felt in the affected areas.

Lightning and hail is also expected in some areas.

There is the possibility of flooding of homes and businesses, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Drivers are being urged to take care on the roads, and there is also the possibility of delays and cancellations on public transport.
