Trump jargon blasted by Plain English campaign

Donald Trump has been blasted by plain English campaigners for a rambling jargon-strewn job advert for a sales boss at his new golf resort.

The 521-word advert for a director of sales and marketing is written in the sort of management-speak beloved of Trump’s old US TV show The Apprentice.

In the ad for the £65,000 a year job at the Trump Turnberry resort in Ayrshire, potential candidates are repeatedly asked to be “proactive” and to inspire colleagues to meet “revenue goals”.

And the job description tells applicants: “You will provide leadership to the resort’s reactive and proactive sales channels, ensuring all activity is aligned to the resort’s goals and objectives.”

The successful candidate will need to “lead and inspire sales and marketing ambassadors to achieve all revenue goals” and “take a proactive approach to leadership.”

Steve Jenner, spokesman for the Plain English campaign, described the advert as a “prime piece of tripe” and revealed that blunder-prone US presidential hopeful Trump was winner of the campaign’s 2015 foot in mouth award.

He said: “This is a classic example of someone taking a handful of job-ad jargon and stirring it in with a bundle of impenetrable nonsense.

“The result of this is a failure to communicate anything meaningful and possibly a successful attempt at excluding and alienating a number of suitable candidates.

“We often say that the style and approach of the leader soon imposes itself on the way an organisation communicates and acts. That certainly seems to be the case here in this prime piece of tripe.”

Mr Jenner said Trump scooped its foot in mouth gong “for offering up a prolific and unflagging stream of clueless waffle during 2015 as part of his entertainingly obnoxious run for the Republican Presidential nomination.”

Meanwhile, in an equally jargon-heavy listing, Trump Turnberry are also looking for a Director of Revenue which is described as “a leadership role, responsible for the effective strategic and tactical implementation of revenue strategy.”

If there is a suitable applicant they will be responsible for “maximizing all resort revenues through effective pricing and inventory management.”

The advertised salary is £50,000-£65,000 and the successful applicant will need to be able to “enforce logical leisure pricing hierarchy for marketing promotions” and to make a “pro-active adoption of new reporting capabilities, micro-Strategy, market vision.”

Trump Turnberry is due to open on June 1 following a £200 million renovation which will include include refurbishment of all guest rooms, restaurants and public spaces and a grand ballroom with space for 500 people.

Donald Trump is well-known for his public statements, whether in jargon-spoeak or in more plain-talking terms.

Trump prompted a petition signed by more than half a million UK residents and prompted a parliamentary debate, for stating: “We need a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States while we figure out what the hell is going on.”

While appearing on a daytime talk show in 2006, Trump said: “If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.”

Trump was roundly criticised for calling Mexicans “rapists”. He said: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

He later expanded on his plans for the USA’s southern neighbour: “I will build a great wall — and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me —and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”

Following a white supremacist shooting spree in South Carolina Trump said that African-American youth had reached “a point where they’ve just about never done more poorly, there’s no spirit, there’s killings on an hourly basis”.

Trump took aim at Republican presidential nominee John McCain, criticising his ‘war hero’ status: “He’s a war hero because he was captured - I like people that weren’t captured, okay?

‘Rockin’ In the Free World’ was used during his candidature announcement, but almost immediately the writer of the song said: “Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of (politician) Bernie Sanders for President of the United States Of America.”

In 2011, Trump claimed that he had an “extremely credible source” which had found that Barack Obama’s birth certificate was a fake. After the president proved his nationality, Trump said he was “proud of myself because I’ve accomplished something nobody has been able to accomplish.” (Obama later joked that Trump’s grudge went back to their childhood days in Kenya.

A tweet stating “If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband, what makes her think she can satisfy America?” was retweeted by Trump, before it was claimed that a member of his team was responsible. Trump however went on to describe his potential opponent as “pathetic”, playing the “woman card”, and not being “rich enough to be incorruptible”.

He also turned on the fairer sex in general — accused of calling women ‘fat pigs’, ‘dogs’, ‘slobs’, and ‘disgusting animals’, Trump responded with: “Only Rosie O’Donnell,” later adding “Women: You have to treat ’em like s***”.

Trump also seemed to mock New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski’s disability - flailing his arms and speaking in a put-on voice, he said: “You gotta see this guy”, but later claimed he was unable to remember what he had done.

Another tweet dismissed scientists and a nation: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”

And most recently, Trump claimed: “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters.”
