Tuning up for a Fairtrade fundraiser

Music is on the menu to help celebrate Fairtrade in Lenzie, with a special concert to be staged on Monday next week (September 19) in Lenzie Union Parish Church.

The event has been organised by Lenzie Fairtrade Group, which recently announced that Lenzie’s Fairtrade Town Status had been renewed until July

2018.

The musical celebration is being hosted by Donald Macleod - a noted musician and former performer with the RSNO, who will conduct Cathedral

Strings - playing some of the best-known and most-loved classical pieces.

Also performing will be Arcara, a critically-lauded recorder group whose performance was enthusiastically received at Campsie Mayfest earlier this year.

They will be performing African Suite No.2 Pina ya phala by Soren Sieg.

The church and hall - where there will be Fair Trade and associated stalls to browse - will be open from 7pm, with the concert starting promptly at

7.30pm, and refreshments will be served during the interval.

Donald said, “I and my fellow professional musicians in Cathedral Strings are delighted to bring a programme of popular classics to highlight

something we all feel strongly about - a fair deal for small struggling farmers in developing countries.

“The addition of Arcara and the very latest local Fair Trade news from John Riches of The Coach House in Balmore will make this an interesting and enjoyable evening for all who come along.”

To cover costs, there will be an admission charge of £5 per adult, but no charge for school-age children.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration at East Dunbartonshire Council, said, “I hope as many people as possible will go

along on 19 September and celebrate the renewal of Lenzie’s Fairtrade Town Status.

“Lenzie’s Fairtrade Group work tirelessly to raise awareness and encourage people to support the cause.
