The university court announced yesterday it will build a new campus at Hamilton International Technology Park on the edge of the town.

Ian Welsh OBE, chair of UWS court, said: “Following a lengthy discussion, the court felt the opportunity to develop what would be the UK’s most environmentally friendly, dynamic and vibrant new campus was one that could not be missed.

“We will now work together in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council and the developer to bring forward a full business case, which will be presented to the university court next year.”

It says it has an “exciting and innovative legacy plan” for the current campus in Almada Street, Hamilton.

The decision will disappoint North Lanarkshire Council which had welcomed the possibility of a move to Eurocentral, one of several options put forward earlier this year by the university.

The authority reckoned it would support about 850 jobs, provide more education opportunitis for the area’s young people and bring other economic spin-offs.

Council leader Jim McCabe had described it as an “exciting” idea, but stressed that it would have to be considered carefully as the university wanted the council to meet the development costs of more than £54 million and lease the buildings.
