Detective Sergeant John Stewart said: “There appears to be no motive for this attack and it’s important we establish how the man came about his injuries. We are of course looking at CCTV images which may provide us with more detailed information, however I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident to get in touch with us, if you saw anything you think was a little odd then please pass your information to officers.

“I would like to assure members of the community that a significant amount of work is being undertaken in this investigation and additional police patrols will be in the area to provide reassurance to local residents.“
