Viridor set to gain waste contract

Viridor Waste Management have been named as preferred bidder for East Dunbartonshire’s waste disposal, in a 25-year contract covering five Clyde Valley council areas.

The project is jointly run by five councils – East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire, to procure a long term waste management solution for treatment and disposal of waste.

Viridor has been selected to design, construct, finance and operate the facilities to treat waste which would otherwise go to landfill.

The scheme is claimed set to save natural resources through increased recycling and green energy recovery.

If its plan is confirmed, Viridor will process around 190,000 tonnes of residual waste per year providing services to a population of more than 845,000 people, helping reach national targets for recycling and landfill diversion by 2025.

The waste will be collected by each council and delivered to a transfer station within their boundary.

It’s reckoned that 90 per cent of waste collected by the councils will now be diverted from landfill.
