Walking side by side for Eastwood

Eastwood Rotary Club is counting the charity cash following a successful walk in the park on Sunday.

Walk for Eastwood saw participants of all abilities taking at least 10 paces, using their 10 minutes in an all-day event at Rouken Glen Park to raise sponsorship money for East Renfrewshire Good Causes (75 per cent) and other charity partners of the rotary club (25%).

ERGC founder Russell Macmillan told The Extra: “It was absolutely wonderful to see all the different groups — from adults with special needs to a very enthusiastic Rainbow group from Greenbank Church — playing their part and showing they care about their neighbours.

“From young to old, able-bodied to disabled, they all represented the people that make up our wonderful community.

“We also owe a big thank you to Eastwood Rotary Club, as without their expertise and organising, this event would never have taken place.”

Some participants went above above and beyond for Good Causes, including wheelchair user Michael Freedman, who completed five laps of the 1km course.

He said: “I had been in training for weeks beforehand, and was delighted to complete five circuits — along with raising a substantial amount of money for charity.”

Russell added his congratulations to Michael on a “dedicated effort — his sense of achievement for completing those five laps was an honour to witness.”

Visitors to Rouken Glen were also able to meet the ponies used in learning disability charity Cosgrove Care’s Equine Facilitated Learning programme.
